Robert Milburn and Elizabeth Kidd

In recreating a family tree from The Milburn Connection newsletters I ran into some situations that were not clear, or I found confusing.  So PLEASE let me know if I have misinterpreted or if new evidence has been discovered for any of these individuals.

We have 7 known children of Robert & Elizabeth Kidd Milburn:
(There are quite a few family trees of Robert & Elizabeth Kidd Milburn posted at familysearch.org with various spellings of the Milburn.  No documentation or records sourced on these trees, however.  Hopefully we can collaborate and find sources for this family and their events.)

1. Margaret, born in Burnhope and christened 21 May 1774


• On Ancestry.com, there is an index for "England, Pallot's Marriage Index, 1780 - 1837" which shows a marriage record for Margaret Milburn to John Peart, 1800.  If you have an Ancestry.com World Membership it can be found here.
• Additionally, Ancestry.com also shows an index for Margaret's marriage to John Peart in the "England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973".   If you have an Ancestry.com World Membership it can be found here.  It provides the exact date of marriage as 22 November 1800, at Stanhope, Durham, England.
• See "The Registers of Stanhope" below for further marriage info.  Margaret and her brother John were married on the same day.
• If anyone has obtained copies of the records these indexes reference, I would love to have a copy.
• Death, burial, and family info have not been researched and documented at this time, but there is a PUBLIC tree at Ancestry.com which indicates names and dates of their immediate family.


2. John born at Black Cleugh farm, christened 06 January 1776
• See "The Registers of Stanhope" below for further marriage info.  John and his sister Margaret were married on the same day.  John married Mary Emerson.  According to The Milburn Connection, John dies in 1803, leaving just one daughter, Margaret, born in 1801. • Additional death, burial, and family info have not been researched and documented at this time.
3. Elizabeth born at Black Cleugh farm, christened 20 June 1778
•  Elizabeth marries Joseph Peart shortly after her father's death in 1800. (The Milburn Connection Vol 1 1983 84 no. 3 page 8). See "The Registers of Stanhope" below for further marriage info.
• A public tree at Ancestry.com shows a copy of a death certificate for Elizabeth Milburn Peart, wife of Joseph Peart.  
• There is also an archived query posted on genealogy.com about this family.
4. Jeremiah born at Black Cleugh farm, christened 4 June 1780
• Jeremiah is my g-g-g-grandfather
• Jeremiah was born 24 June 1774 and christened the 4th of June 1780 (The Millburn Connection Vol 1 1983 84 no. 3 page 6)
• Jeremiah married Sarah Smith the 4th of December 1808.  FamilySearch.org shows the index for "England Marriages, 1538-1973" here.
• On Ancestry.com, there is an index for "England, Pallot's Marriage Index, 1780 - 1837" which shows a marriage record for Jeremiah Milburn and Sarah Smith, here.
• I was fortunate enough to visit Curryville Cemetery in Hillsborough, Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada in 2002 with my sister.  There is a findagrave.com page which shows the gravestone for Jeremiah, wife, Sarah, their son Robert, and his wife Susannah.
• The original Milburn Connection focused on the descendants of Jeremiah and Sarah so there will be much more info on his descendants in future posts.
5. Ann born at Black Cleugh farm, christened 4 July 1782
• I have no further info Ann.
6. Isaac born at Black Cleugh farm, christened 16 April 1785
• I have no further info on Isaac
7. Thomas born at Black Cleugh farm, christened 14 September 1788
• The only additional info I have for Thomas was this bit of explanation that mentions Thomas' grandchild:

Spotlight: Gladys Irene Millburn Krohn

The original Milburn Connection often spotlighted individual descendants of Jeremiah Milburn and wife Sarah Smith.

This is the first one I came across today, the spotlight on Gladys Millburn Krohn from The Millburn Connection Vol 3 1986 no. 2 page 10.  I can't help but wonder what Toni Krainock and Beverly Murphy could have done with all the resources of the internet!  To add to this spotlight, there is also a FindAGrave Page for Gladys here.here.

The Milburn Connection shows Glady's birth date as 30 October, 1901.  Her obituary and FindAGrave list her birth date as 12 October 1903.

From FindAGrave I discover that Gladys' middle name is Irene.  I can now add a "Burial Fact" to my ancestry.com tree.  The picture displayed at findagrave is apparently the one used in The Milburn Connection.  I also requested a photo of the gravestone on FindAGrave.  There are many links to family members as well, so I can update those profile pages on my ancestry.com tree.  CAUTION:  FindAGrave provides great hints & leads, but never take anything for fact. . . Trust BUT VERIFY!

• 1920 US Federal Census (indicates she was born in Iowa about 1904 and was living in 'Cedar, Linn County, Iowa'; Mother: Malicia, Father: Addison)
• 1925 Iowa State Census (Indicates she is married to Walter Krohn, was born about 1904 in Iowa, is living in Cedar Rapids Precinct 16, Linn, Iowa,USA;  Mother: Melissa Haris, born about 1870 in South Dakota, Father: Robb Millburn, born about 1860 in Iowa.  Declares religion as "U.B.") (Wow!  This has taken me hours to update all the people associated with Gladys in my tree!  For every obituary, I also add a 'Residence Fact' to people mentioned in the obituary, for example, if Gladys had had a daughter named Jane, and it said 'Surviving is daughter, Jane Doe, Omaha, Neb"  I would add a 'Residence Fact' for Jane Doe, say:  1993, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA, and in the description I would add:  'Residence at time of mother's death'.  If I didn't know Jane had married I would add the husband as 'Unknown' [first name] and 'Whatever her married last name was' [last name].  I also add a 'Burial Fact' with the cemetery information.  If no gravestone picture exists on FindAGrave I usually try to request one.)

The Milburn Connection Reborn

In the mid 1980s two sisters created a wonderful newsletter called The Milburn Connection for descendants of Jeremiah Milburn and Sarah Smith.  Their love of history and enthusiasm for creating and sustaining our family history inspired me to try and bring their efforts to light again.

Although Toni Krainock passed away in 2005, I have not been able to track down Beverly Murphy.  Would love to hear whatever happened with the book they were writing.  I would also like to gain permission to republish pages of their original newsletters and add information that has come to light since then.  I only have a few of the newsletters, but they are fascinating to read.  They were the impetus for many Milburn/Millburn Family Reunions in New Brunswick as well as in Salt Lake City, Utah.

One of the features of their newsletter was the contributions of so many cousins telling the stories of their own ancestors . . . so if you are of Milburn/Millburn descent, please forward me your stories & photos for publication here!  Just send them to MidwestAncesTree at gmail dot com.

A brief introduction to our Milburn family compiled from the work of many researchers inspired by Bev & Toni and their efforts:

Jeremiah Milburn was born the 24th of June 1774 of the Black Cleugh Farm, Stanhope, Durham County, England to Robert Milburn and Elizabeth Kidd. (from The Milburn Connection Vol 1 1983 84 no. 3  page 6A).  His christening is recorded as the 4th of June 1780.

St. John's Chapel in Stanhope, Durham, England records Jeremiah's marriage to Sarah Smith, daughter of Joseph Smith and Sarah Waugh, on the 24th of December 1808.  One of the things I love about reading the old Milburn Connection newsletters is how the sisters wrote the stories of our ancestors.

Having visited the land of our ancestors the sisters took us on a walking tour of the day Robert Milburn married Elizabeth Kidd, supplemented with the pictures they had taken on their tour.  This is an excerpt from that story (always written in all CAPS, but re-typed here for readability):

"Robert and Elizabeth and their wedding party walked toward the center of town.  Stankhope, from the year of 1421 has held two fairs a year, as well as a Friday market each week.  Robert and Elizabeth had planned their marriage so they could take in the festivities of the fair.  . . ."
